fort apache

Review: Fort Apache (1948)

This is another wonderful John Ford directed film. Mr. Ford I have to say was one of the best directors of the Twentieth century. All of his films are timeless and worth the effort to watch. All have good stories and touches of humor as well as drama that makes each one worthy of your time and effort.
In this particular film Henry Fonda stars as a by the book officer who feels cheated by the regular army since he is sent to Fort Apache. In tow is his daughter played by the grown up Shirley Temple in one of her last films.
The co-star is John Wayne as well as others from the Ford company of actors. All do very well under Mr. Ford’s direction. It is also the very first film made in Monument Valley.
One scene within the movie that until now I found a look into the past has now struck me as if I am looking into the present, which is not only shocking but sad when you truly think upon it. The scene to which I am referring is when Col. Thursday takes his soldiers to the Indian Reservation to confront the Indian Agent. Mr. Meacham the government’s representative shows me something that I have come to realize is present in today’s government. He shows contempt yet he says he cares for everyone. When I see him I just see Lois Lerner and her attitude of self-righteous hypocrisy. I am just reminded of how corrupt those in the government are at this time due to rules, regulations and unions that do not allow us to fire and or jail these corrupt people that fill our government agencies. The one line that Peter Fonda says is something that needs to be said to all:
“Mr. Meacham you’re blackguard, a liar, a hypocrite and a stench in the nostrils of honest men; if it were in my power I would hang you from the nearest tree and leave your carcass for the buzzards, but as you are a representative of the United States Government I pledge you the corporation and the protection of my command.”
There will be those that wish to bluster and protest me making this comparison of this character in this movie to those currently in the government. It is something that each person must search their souls about before they do protest. If it were not true then there would be no Lois Lerner, hundreds of Vets would not have died without being taken care of at the VA. Billions of dollars would not have been wasted for the Obamacare website. This is all due to political corruption and mismanagement. It is why the Federal Government MUST be down sized ASAP.
