Christianity and Movies

Now to get this out of the way. Yes, I watch movies. I have to fill some time not studying the Word. Does this mean I am sinning, most likely and I ask God’s forgiveness as well.

First and foremost. There is no such thing as a “Christian movie.” There are inspirational movies and these are the worst type of movies someone who calls themselves “Christian” should ever watch. Why this is, is because “inspirational” is equal to people pleasing. Therefore, those that make them and work within them fall into the curses given by the Holy Spirit within the following verses:

Galatians 1:6-10 NKJV – I marvel that you are turning away so soon from Him who called you in the grace of Christ, to a different gospel, which is not another; but there are some who trouble you and want to pervert the gospel of Christ. But even if we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel to you than what we have preached to you, let him be accursed. As we have said before, so now I say again, if anyone preaches any other gospel to you than what you have received, let him be accursed. For do I now persuade men, or God? Or do I seek to please men? For if I still pleased men, I would not be a bondservant of Christ.

Now we can get into the next part, for these verses have opened that door.

With the statement: “I marvel that you are turning away so soon from Him who called you in the grace of Christ, to a different gospel, which is not another; but there are some who trouble you and want to pervert the gospel of Christ.”

The movies industry, which was and may still be primarily run by Jews, was never designed to help Christianity. In fact it was designed and still is designed to turn people away from God and the Lord’s teachings.

People will turn to many examples that are out there. “The Ten Commandments” (1956), “Ben Hur” (1959), “King of Kings” (1961). In recent times movies like “Hacksaw Ridge” (2016), and “Son of God” (2014)

The Ten Commandments script adds to the Word of God.

Deuteronomy 4:2 NKJV – You shall not add to the word which I command you, nor take from it, that you may keep the commandments of the LORD your God which I command you.

The entire Bible is God’s command unto to those that profess to be His children.

Ben Hur was a book written by a Civil War veteran, and is more of an exploration of one man’s journey to coming to worship God through Jesus Christ. However, it is very Jewish in its content in the early verses. The latest was some trip into fantasy land.

King of Kings is totally Catholic in its content and doesn’t accurately depict the four gospels and so is twice cursed, which may explain why it’s star fell down a flight of stairs breaking his neck and dying.

As for Hacksaw Ridge the protagonist is a Jehovah Witness. Which is another theme that is found within movies. They use religions that are more like cults instead of using other denomination which teach that salvation can be lost. Does this mean in real life the protagonist wasn’t born-again? No. All evidence points to the opposite of this.

This is also true when looking at the movie “Keys to the Kingdom” (1944), which is the story of a Catholic priest and missionary. So I will make this very clear. There are few within all denomination that qualify as followers of Christ. But they are the exception, not the rule, which is extremely sad.

The movie Son of God is a people pleaser movie and is full of errors, and teachings, that all that is required is faith alone, which is not taught by the Word of God.

James 2:26 NKJV – For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also.

One of the greatest signs that movies are against Christianity is the mere fact that those that make these movies allow things within them that people take for granted and thus emulate and copy it because if its in the movies it has to be good. Remember those that made them and make them are atheist for the most part. Those that make inspirational movies I have already addressed, but back on track. If those making them don’t acknowledge God nor Jesus Christ as their Savior. How can be what is seen in them something a “Christian” should emulate?

You can’t.

Movies that show certain behaviors associated with people professing to being “Christian” needs to take what is shown and do the complete opposite.

A prime example of this is open and group pray given by a person of the cloth. When the Bible makes if VERY clear where prayer should occur:

Matthew 6:5-6 NKJV – “And when you pray, you shall not be like the hypocrites. For they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the corners of the streets, that they may be seen by men. Assuredly, I say to you, they have their reward. But you, when you pray, go into your room, and when you have shut your door, pray to your Father who is in the secret place; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly.

“Well what about: Acts 1:14 NKJV – These all continued with one accord in prayer and supplication, with the women and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with His brothers.”

Someone just protested.

Oh, you mean when Peter didn’t wait for the Pentecost and took it upon Himself to convince the rest of the apostles and Christ’s mother to enter into sin by overriding the commandment given to them in Matthew 6:5-6? Is that what you use as an anchor to live in sin?

Then go ahead and continue to do so.

The only place that that Word of God has any bearing in your life is found by studying the Word of God. Not reading. Studying. There is a HUGE difference. Knowing what the words meant when they were first written down on parchment does more for your salvation and your sanctification then anything else.

Just because you accept Christ as your Savior. Your responsibility in the relationship with Christ doesn’t end there. This is one of the greatest misconceptions that is also shown within movies. Christ Himself makes it clear that salvation can and will be lost:

John 15:1-6 NKJV  “I am the true vine, and My Father is the vinedresser. Every branch in Me that does not bear fruit He takes away; and every branch that bears fruit He prunes, that it may bear more fruit. You are already clean because of the word which I have spoken to you. Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in Me. “I am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing. If anyone does not abide in Me, he is cast out as a branch and is withered; and they gather them and throw them into the fire, and they are burned.

To abide in Christ is accomplished by seeking sanctification, which can only be accomplished by studying the Word of God and leaving the world behind. Movies mimic the world. Christians are told this:

Romans 12:1-2 NKJV – I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service. And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.

Whatever the world loves you shouldn’t be doing. What the world loves is shown in movies so no one that professes to following Christ should try and do what is done in movies.

Discussion

I find it interesting when Hollywood makes movies about people that call themselves “Christian.” I don’t mean the way they show the snobbery and uppishness that is portrayed in most side characters in modern movies and TV shows. But the main protagonist of a movie. I have two examples. The movies “Keys to the Kingdom” (1944) and “Hacksaw Ridge.” (2016)

In both these films they pick a group that teaches dissension. That these groups are the only way to heaven. As you can tell from the way I have worded things, these are two different groups. For the first movie it is Catholicism. For the second movie it is the Seventh Day Adventist.

I could go into the problems with these two groups. However, most would tune it out or just stop reading or listening. I am not here to go through a rehash of these issues about these groups, but about Hollywood. The movie industry. It was their choice to pick from these two groups. These two groups teach that they are the only way to heaven.

Now here I will get a different type of protest. Being that Christianity teaches that the only way to heaven is through Jesus Christ. As witnessed here:

John 14:6 NKJV – Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.

Again, that is not the purpose of today’s teaching.

It is this reality that they picked these two groups. The mere fact that they did pick them still turns people away from the Truth. They will run to Catholicism, they will run to the Seventh Day Adventist, but not God. They run to man-made doctrines and teachings and not the teachings of Jesus Christ.

Now in both these movies they show the protagonist and someone that had been humbled. I will go a step further. I say that they show someone that is a true follower of Christ.

Yes, you heard me correctly, as once again confusion rears its head at what was just said.

If people would actually study the Bible for themselves. They would learn that what I just said has more bearing upon the Truth than what those in Hollywood would have wished to occur. Or yet another way to look at it. When teaching lies, they must have elements of truth shine through so that their lie will be a sweet taste upon the minds of those watching these films.

In both movies the lead character shows more true discipleship to Jesus Christ than anyone in the film or those watching. The thing is most don’t even register this truth, but if they do, they will seek it within the two man-made religions offered in these films.

Now I wish to make a point here. It will also show that how you look at the Word of God in a particular issue in some cases may give a view of the truth. Again, that many don’t wish to hear.

Matthew 7:13-14 NKJV – “Enter by the narrow gate; for wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction, and there are many who go in by it. Because narrow is the gate and difficult is the way which leads to life, and there are few who find it.

I honestly believe, by the mere fact that Christianity still exists at all is due to that fact of those that have taken the narrow path for the last two thousand years. The majority of these years was under the manipulation of the Catholic Church. Yet Christianity still survived and surfaced. This was seen when Martin Luther started the Reformation nearly 1100 years after the Catholic Church came to power and made it illegal for the commoner to even read a Bible.

Are you starting to see? Are you starting to understand?

Most are now seeing how corrupt Hollywood is.

Allow me to give an example. Most in Hollywood use their “fame” to dictate to those that watch their films or TV shows. I remember when it was the unwritten law that those that performed as actors kept their personal lives separate from their roles. And thus, kept them secret. A prime example. Rock Hudson. A leading actor that most respected and liked his performances. He was the lead in many romance films. He even played a minister that was also a pilot in the Air Force, in a film I could have used as another example. However, due to what is about to be said it was best I didn’t. For it was revealed upon his death that in reality he was a homosexual and had a male partner most his life. The only reason this became known was because he died of AIDS. This news shocked the entire world. Now those that keep their personal lives and thoughts to themselves are the exception instead of the norm as it once had been.

This is the way Hollywood works though. It is an industry built around stories. Fiction. Lies. It encourages the worship of humanity. To cause those watching to esteem and emulate the protagonist. What does the Bible say about this esteeming?

Luke 16:13-15 NKJV – “No servant can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or else he will be loyal to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon.” Now the Pharisees, who were lovers of money, also heard all these things, and they derided Him. And He said to them, “You are those who justify yourselves before men, but God knows your hearts. For what is highly esteemed among men is an abomination in the sight of God.”

Hollywood teachs people to become an abomination to God. It encourages them to seek after mammon. What is mammon?

Mammon – G3126 – mamónas – riches, money, possessions, property.

Mammon is that which is highly esteemed among men and especially those within the movie and TV industry. Just look at the theme of movies through the years. A core element in many is the seeking after the accumulation of mammon.  To have those watching to picking mammon over what is Godly.

Therefore, the majority of “entertainment” that is presented on the big screen and for that matter: the little screen in your houses.  These are designed to turn you from God. They teach those watching to glorify humans, never God. Also to distract you from reading the Word of God.

This verse makes it very clear so I will restate it.

Luke 16:13 NKJV – “No servant can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or else he will be loyal to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon.”

The movie and television industry teaches and promotes mammon. Therefore, those presented in this industry can never serve God. Why never? Because it is made clear those in this industry serve and are loyal to mammon. Therefore, they despise God and all that goes with Him. This is seen in many ways if you just truly look and listen.

Now look at this verse from the Bible and place those being talked to here as those that are within the Hollywood industry.

John 8:44 NKJV – You are of your father the devil, and the desires of your father you want to do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and does not stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaks a lie, he speaks from his own resources, for he is a liar and the father of it.

By reinforcing that seeking after mammon those in this industry murder millions upon millions. Leading them to eternal damnation.

Look to 2 Peter.

2 Peter 2:1-19 NKJV – But there were also false prophets among the people, even as there will be false teachers among you, who will secretly bring in destructive heresies, even denying the Lord who bought them, and bring on themselves swift destruction. And many will follow their destructive ways, because of whom the way of truth will be blasphemed. By covetousness they will exploit you with deceptive words; for a long time their judgment has not been idle, and their destruction does not slumber. For if God did not spare the angels who sinned, but cast them down to hell and delivered them into chains of darkness, to be reserved for judgment; and did not spare the ancient world, but saved Noah, one of eight people, a preacher of righteousness, bringing in the flood on the world of the ungodly; and turning the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah into ashes, condemned them to destruction, making them an example to those who afterward would live ungodly; and delivered righteous Lot, who was oppressed by the filthy conduct of the wicked (for that righteous man, dwelling among them, tormented his righteous soul from day to day by seeing and hearing their lawless deeds)— then the Lord knows how to deliver the godly out of temptations and to reserve the unjust under punishment for the day of judgment, and especially those who walk according to the flesh in the lust of uncleanness and despise authority. They are presumptuous, self-willed. They are not afraid to speak evil of dignitaries, whereas angels, who are greater in power and might, do not bring a reviling accusation against them before the Lord. But these, like natural brute beasts made to be caught and destroyed, speak evil of the things they do not understand, and will utterly perish in their own corruption, and will receive the wages of unrighteousness, as those who count it pleasure to carouse in the daytime. They are spots and blemishes, carousing in their own deceptions while they feast with you, having eyes full of adultery and that cannot cease from sin, enticing unstable souls. They have a heart trained in covetous practices, and are accursed children. They have forsaken the right way and gone astray, following the way of Balaam the son of Beor, who loved the wages of unrighteousness; but he was rebuked for his iniquity: a dumb donkey speaking with a man’s voice restrained the madness of the prophet. These are wells without water, clouds carried by a tempest, for whom is reserved the blackness of darkness forever. For when they speak great swelling words of emptiness, they allure through the lusts of the flesh, through lewdness, the ones who have actually escaped from those who live in error. While they promise them liberty, they themselves are slaves of corruption; for by whom a person is overcome, by him also he is brought into bondage.

Bondage that leads to eternal death. AKA murder of the soul for all eternity. Joining Satan and all that embrace becoming an abomination in the sight of the Lord through Jesus Christ.

God Bless

Movies, TV and Christianity

This has been an ongoing issue basically for as long movies have been in existence. One think that all agree upon when looked upon in the correct light. Movies affect how you think. This was reinforced during World War II when Hollywood directors went into the military and applied their profession to the war. Through their work we got film events like the Battle of Midway, and the Aleutian Islands, as well as events like the first American Bomber to complete 25 mission with the same crew, the Memphis Bell. These directors knew that movies influenced how people thought and behaved. This has never changed.
I am not saying Christians should totally stop watching movies, even though some have. Many as they grow in their faith and understanding of the Bible come to comprehend that movies and TV are something that they need to be more selective about. I myself tend to watch older movies that still had a morality within them that was instituted by the production code of 1934 for movies in the 1930s due to an increase in nudity and other unsavory aspects. An Example, are you aware that Maureem O’Sullivan appeared nude in “Tarzan of the Apes” in 1932. You can see this in the unedited version of the movies. It was this movie and others that brought about the code for movies due to Christian uproar.
Too many watch movies and TV and just take what they see for granted not thinking that their actions have consequences. Their participation actually encourages more movies and TV shows to be made with the same aspects. A TV show called “Will and Grace” enabled the TV series “Modern Family.” The behavior shown in these series are counter to Christian teachings and thinking. However many that call themselves “Christian” watched and still watch these shows. So they encourage sin and thus per James 4:17 are in turn sinning themselves. Christians need to be more active with their faith and beliefs in how they choose what they are going to partake and spend their money upon including movies and TV.
Whenever I see something that is counter to the teachings of the Bible I no longer watch them. Thus I do not give my time or my money to these TV shows and movies. For those in Hollywood have shown time and again that they will do all in their power to influences how you think, even if it is only on the screen for a few seconds at first. That few seconds will turn into minutes then hours then all the time. It is up to you as a Christian where you wish to stand, with God or with liberal Hollywood.

The Suicide of Hollywood

Yesterday I watched “Son of God” with my youngest son. I found several things to type about. Possibly a review, some of the things that the writers decided to place into the movie, amongst other things. What stuck out the most for me though was the lack of Hollywood. The last time Hollywood was truly present for a Biblical film was The Bible: The beginning in 1966 and even then it was not fully Hollywood. Hollywood had turned its back on God. It had embraced sensationalism, sex, scandal and drugs.
In previous decades, they gave us movies like “The Ten Commandments”, “Ben Hur”, “King of Kings”, “The Greatest Story Ever Told”. In previous decades, Hollywood prospered and made producer, actor and companies rich. As a result, the money corrupted the industry and the people within it.
It return God is now showing Hollywood what is the result when humans place themselves before God. Yet they are blind to see it. They have campaigned to improve the world for humans as a result laws have been made. Laws they must follow which are making it impossible for them to make profitable motion pictures. As a result, Hollywood is dying a slow self-imposed death through laws they helped to create by placing themselves ahead of God.
